  • US at Risk of Losing Measles Elimination Status Amid Vaccine Misinformation Concerns, with RFK Jr. in the Spotlight

Blue press Journal – The United States is facing the possibility of losing its measles elimination status, a designation it achieved in 2000, according to public health officials. This status, granted by the World Health Organization, signifies the absence of continuous measles transmission for 12 months or more. However, rising outbreaks fueled by declining vaccination rates have put this achievement in jeopardy.

In the recent year, measles cases have surged in several states, linked primarily to communities with low immunization coverage. Experts point to the spread of vaccine misinformation as a significant driver. Among the most visible figures associated with anti-vaccine rhetoric is Robert F. Kennedy Jr. secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) who has long questioned vaccine safety despite overwhelming scientific evidence supporting immunization.

Kennedy, who founded the anti-vaccine advocacy group Children’s Health Defense, has amplified unfounded claims about the alleged dangers of vaccines, including the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) shot. Public health officials warn that such messaging undermines trust in vaccines and can lead to hesitancy, leaving communities vulnerable to preventable disease outbreaks.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stresses that maintaining high vaccination coverage—typically above 95%—is essential to prevent measles from regaining a foothold. Measles is among the most contagious viruses known, and even a small drop in immunization rates can lead to rapid spread.

If transmission continues for more than a year, the U.S. could lose its elimination status, a symbolic setback and a sign of eroding public health protections. Health experts urge the public to rely on scientifically verified sources for vaccine information, emphasizing that measles is not a benign childhood illness but a potentially deadly disease.

The situation dramatically underscores the perilous collision of public health and rampant misinformation—and the dire fallout that ensues when baseless claims drown out scientific truth. Thanks to Donald Trump for the dubious honor of appointing Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to this chaos.

  • CDC Warns of Severe Flu Season: Understanding H3N2 Risks

What to know about the new K variant of influenza A

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed the emergence of a new influenza A strain, specifically the K subclade of the H3N2 subtype, which currently accounts for most H3N2 infections. Historically, H3N2 has been associated with higher rates of hospitalizations and deaths among older adults compared to other influenza strains. Public health experts warn that this winter could see a particularly severe flu season, especially if vaccination coverage remains low. Influenza A generally causes more severe illness than influenza B, increasing the likelihood of hospitalization.

Flu symptoms typically develop rapidly and can range from mild to severe, with common presentations including fever, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, muscle aches, headaches, and fatigue. The CDC advises individuals experiencing breathing difficulties, severe pain, weakness, or non-improving symptoms to seek urgent care. Vulnerable populations, such as young children and older adults, may require prompt medical attention to avoid complications.

Preliminary data from the United Kingdom indicate that this season’s flu vaccines offer at least partial protection against the new strain. Even when not perfectly matched, vaccines can provide cross-protection, reducing illness severity and hospitalization risk. Nevertheless, experts express greater concern over declining vaccination rates, particularly among children, than over the degree of strain-vaccine match. Medical professionals emphasize that while the vaccine is not flawless, it is effective in preventing severe outcomes, intensive care admissions, and deaths.

As of mid-November, overall flu activity in the United States remains low, with Louisiana reporting moderate levels and states such as Colorado and Mississippi experiencing slight increases. Most infections to date have been reported in children. Data collection has been partially delayed by the federal government shutdown and the Thanksgiving holiday. Although current national infection rates are not unusually high, flu activity typically peaks between December and February, suggesting a potential surge in the near future. Experts anticipate increased spread as the season progresses, underscoring the importance of vaccination as a preventive measure.

  • Trump Administration’s Move to Defund mRNA Vaccines Will Put Millions at Risk

Trump is Making America Sick Again (MASA)

Blue Press Journal: In a shocking move, the Trump Administration has announced its decision to end financial support for research into mRNA vaccines, a technology that has been credited with saving millions of lives during the COVID-19 pandemic. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made the announcement on Tuesday, revealing that the administration would be canceling $500 million worth of research aimed at using mRNA technology to develop new vaccines.

The decision has been met with widespread criticism from medical professionals, who warn that it will have devastating consequences for public health. According to a 2022 study referenced on the National Institutes of Health’s website, COVID-19 vaccines prevented 14.4 million deaths in their first year of availability. By cutting off funding for mRNA vaccine research, the Trump Administration is putting the lives of millions of Americans at risk.

“I don’t think I’ve seen a more dangerous decision in public health in my 50 years in the business,” said Mike Osterholm, an epidemiologist at the University of Minnesota, in an interview with The Associated Press. “mRNA vaccines allow for rapid production, which is a critical factor in combating pandemics. This decision will make America less safe and lead to more deaths.”

Alastair McAlpine, a pediatric infectious diseases physician, described Kennedy’s actions as “insanity” given that “no other technology promises to provide as much protection against an array of diseases.” Writing on Bluesky, McAlpine warned that “never has America been more vulnerable” as a result of the Trump Administration’s decision.

The move has also raised concerns about the administration’s commitment to science and public health. Critics argue that the decision is ideologically driven and will systematically turn the USA from a leader in science to an anti-scientific backwater of quackery and pseudoscience.

Kennedy’s own history has also come under scrutiny, with many pointing to his past antics, including hiding a dead bear in New York City’s Central Park and his claim of having a brain worm eating his brain. The decision to defund mRNA vaccine research has led many to question Kennedy’s fitness to serve as Health and Human Services Secretary.

  • RFK Jr.’s Vaccine Guidance Delays: Consequences for Public Health

Until recently, many people may not have been familiar with the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the vaccine advisory panel of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). ACIP is essential in deciding which vaccines are administered to both children and adults, what insurance will cover, and which vaccines will be provided free of charge to millions of low-income children. Consequently, the panel’s decisions have a profound impact on the health of all Americans, with some choices potentially determining life or death.

Recently, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. took the extraordinary step of dismissing all 17 members of ACIP. Just two days later, he announced eight individuals he has selected to replace them. One of the newly appointed members, Vicky Pebsworth, has a background with the National Vaccine Information Center, an anti-vaccine organization. Her appointed raising clear questions on both qualifications and conflict of interests.

Kennedy’s actions can be likened to a scenario where all air traffic controllers in the United States are abruptly fired and replaced by individuals who not only lack expertise in air traffic control but also harbor skepticism about flying itself. This analogy underscores the gravity of the situation.

As of last week, the panel has yet to recommend a Covid-19 vaccine for the upcoming fall season. This lack of guidance is concerning as doctors rely on ACIP’s recommendations to order vaccines in a timely manner. The delay could lead to challenges in getting the necessary shots to those who need them, resulting in unnecessary hospitalizations and even potential fatalities. Rural family medicine practitioners, in particular, may find it difficult to stock vaccines, especially given the financial pressures they face.

Members of ACIP convene at least three times a year to review scientific data on vaccines and establish recommendations for various age groups. If the CDC endorses ACIP’s recommendations, a vaccine may officially become part of the immunization schedule for both children and adults. For the average American, this could mean facing out-of-pocket expenses for crucial vaccines if their insurance only covers those recommended by ACIP. With rising costs for essentials like gas and groceries, this additional financial burden could be overwhelming.

Ultimately, the choices made by RFK Jr. could result in tragic, preventable deaths, underscoring the urgent and vital necessity for informed, responsible leadership in vaccine policy.

  • No to Vaccine, Crowd Really?

The rapid development of effective COVID vaccines in less than a year during the pandemic was a groundbreaking achievement in the long history of vaccination. It seemed like we were finally entering an era where we could protect ourselves against infectious diseases.

But hold on a second! Just when we thought we were making progress, President-elect Donald Trump decides to nominate an antivaccine activist, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., as the top health official in the nation. What could possibly go wrong, right?

Now, we have infectious disease and public health experts warning us that we might be heading towards deadly epidemics of measles, whooping cough, meningitis, and even polio. All thanks to Kennedy and former House member Dave Weldon potentially leading the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

These two geniuses, Kennedy and Weldon, have decided to endorse debunked theories linking vaccines to autism and other chronic diseases. Because who needs reputable scientific studies when you have these guys spreading misinformation, right? And let’s not forget Weldon’s star appearances in antivaccine films after leaving Congress. Bravo, gentlemen, bravo.

The president-elect also appeared open to the groundbreaking polio vaccine being “looked at.”
