Well, well, well, it seems like the Trump administration just can’t seem to get their act together, can they? Another day, another setback. A federal judge decided to rain on their parade on Tuesday, calling out their plan to freeze federal funding as “arbitrary and capricious” and possibly a violation of the First Amendment. Judge Loren AliKhan basically told the White House Office of Management and Budget, “Nice try, but nope, you can’t just take away money that Congress already approved.” So, sorry Trump, you can’t mess with the programs that millions of Americans rely on.
AliKhan didn’t hold back, pointing out how ridiculous it was to think they could freeze $3 trillion in federal spending overnight and expect every agency to figure it out in less than a day. I mean, come on, who thought that was a good idea? Not surprisingly, legal challenges started flooding in after the memo dropped on Jan. 27. And even though courts pushed back on Trump’s freeze, the chaos it caused didn’t just magically disappear. Head Start preschool programs were on the verge of shutting down, and people on Medicaid were left high and dry without access to their health care.
So, Trump, maybe next time think before you try to pull a fast one. It’s not a good look when your plans fall apart faster than a house of cards in a windstorm.
