The Great Noncitizen Voting Myth: How the Trump Administration Went on a Wild Goose Chase

November 2, 2026

Millions of American’s will head down to their local schools or churches to vote in the 2026 mid-term elections. You will have to wait in line, sign in with a poll officer and maybe show your driver’s license depending on the state you live in.

Polling site with voters, voting machines, registration, and ballot box labeled “VOTE HERE”

However, you will never have to prove your citizenship in the United States of America. Traditionally, you would sign a form to confirm your citizenship. While anti-voting fraud activists might view this as a significant security flaw, thorough journalism has demonstrated otherwise. Therefore, anti-voting fraud activists may consider this a major security gap, but thorough investigating journalism has shown us otherwise.

After the 2024 election, the Trump administration told federal agencies to go on a huge hunt to catch any non citizens voting. Investigative journalists including ProPublica reporters followed the federal investigators to see if they could find any hordes of undocumented voters.

The data shows:

Election Directors are the first people to fight election fraud. They are dedicated civil servants who oversee the voting process within their state and local areas.

Overall the Trump administration investigations found little to no fraud. Every year thorough research has shown that non citizen voting is extremely rare. It occurs at a rate of 0.0001% to 0.003%. By creating a scare around non citizen voting the Trump administration used federal power to set up a voter suppression campaign. This has cast unnecessary doubt over our precious voting system.
