Donald Trump has shown yet again how he bizarrely doesn’t share American values when it comes to the Kremlin. After meeting visiting Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev behind closed doors, Trump went on to again promote the Kremlin’s narrative of equivalence in the war, after ignoring visiting Ukrainian delegates.
When asked about Vladimir Putin’s continuous killing of Ukrainian civilians in their homes, schools and hospitals Trump brushed aside the issue. Instead of condemning the authoritarian’s war crimes, Trump claimed there was equivalence between the two countries. “I bring it up on both sides,” Trump claimed, suggesting that Ukraine are in some way equally responsible for the death and destruction caused in a war that Russia started.
This disgusting narrative of equivalence is completely against American values. The US has been the world’s champion of freedom, independence and democracy for generations. By supporting Putin’s war of terror and ignoring the democratic ally, Trump is showing how he doesn’t care about the core values of the country.
Although Trump hints at a major secret deal being made which could affect all of Europe, his history shows that any deal he makes will come at the cost of Ukrainian freedom. Trump has shown that he cannot be trusted to lead America by choosing to support a murderous dictator over a struggling democracy.
