A Collision Course: Democrats take over Congress and Trump appoints Stephen Miller

NOVEMEBR 7, 2026

In the November midterms, voters sent a clear message to the White House that they want to rein in executive power by handing the Democrats majority in both the House and Senate. However, the president has doubled down on his opposition by appointing Stephen Miller, a staunch ideologue, as White House Chief of Staff after firing Susie Wiles.

Democrats were outraged by the news. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) said “Buckle up: this is a sign of Trump’s contempt for the voters.” Another kick in the teeth for the American people. An administration that was punished at the ballot box for being cruel and callous to our economy is now rewarding the architect of ICE’s reign of terror. Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) said “architect of ICE’s reign of terror shows that in Donald Trump’s administration, cruelty is rewarded.”

With the appointment of Miller, any hope of working with Congress has been destroyed. Sen. Andy Kim (D-N.J.) said “We elected people to provide stability and relief but they’ve gone ahead and appointed someone who has done nothing but cause division and corruption.” Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) said “Clearly they’ve learned nothing.”

The newly formed Democrat majority will demand accountability from the Trump administration. They will wield their power to investigate and subpoena. They will be highly critical of any legislation emanating from the White House with Miller in charge.
